Go for Ammonia Free Hair Dye!

Ammonia is a prevalent ingredient in hair dyes. It is included in these chemical formulations because of its ability to open up the cuticle of the hair and swell the strands thereby allowing the color molecules to penetrate to the cortex. This yields stunning color changes that are long lasting giving ammonia its popularity in many hair dyes. However, the use of a harsh chemical like ammonia on hair can prove more damaging than useful in the long run.

The very property of ammonia that enables you to achieve drastic color changes is what makes it the most damaging to your hair. It causes damage to the hair cuticle which ultimately leads to a degradation of the structural integrity of hair. It also leads to protein loss in hair. Overtime, this manifests as dry, brittle, and unhealthy looking hair. It doesn’t seem worth it to color your hair if you are just going to permanently damage it in the long run.

In addition to damaging your hair, the toxic fumes that ammonia gives off have a negative impact on not only your health but also your hair stylist who applies the product to your hair. Ammonia is highly corrosive and some of the negative effects include irritation to the eyes, respiratory system, nose, throat, skin (ammonia can cause chemical burns in higher concentrations) as well as it being a potential endocrine disruptor.

Keeping this in mind, you might think that choosing hair dyes that advertise as “ammonia free” would be better for your hair. While these hair dyes are definitely less damaging to hair, they are still loaded with chemical alternatives to ammonia like ethanolamine (also known as monoethanolamine or MEA) that won’t do your hair any favors in the long run potentially being equally damaging as hair dyes loaded with ammonia.

Your best bet to dye your hair whilst still ensuring that not only are you not causing long term damage but are actually nourishing and protecting your hair is choosing organic and non-toxic hair dyes.
