BIG Hydration Series - 1. Watermelon
The benefits of staying well hydrated are far reaching.
From ensuring optimal organ functioning to impacting the health of our skin, hair, and nails, there are many reasons you should be reaching for a glass of water right now. However, there are also a number of other foods and drinks you can consume to ensure you stay well hydrated.
As we begin a series of posts on the different ways of ensure optimal hydration, we will start with an intensely hydrating fruit with a water content of 92% - watermelon! Although the high water content is fairly obvious, the fruit is after all named water-melon, there are many other properties that are less known and they can pack a powerful health punch.
Watermelon is extremely rich in lycopene. Lycopene is an antioxidant carotenoid that has been linked to a reduction in the risk of cancers, heart disease, and intense protection from UV radiation. This antioxidant is what gives watermelon its rich red color. It is also extremely rich in other vitamins and minerals like Vitamins A, B1, B5, B6, C, potassium, and magnesium. It also rich in a particular important amino acid called citrulline.
These nutrients work together to reduce inflammation in the body as well as prevent oxidative damage to the cells and tissues in the body. They also work together to improve blood pressure levels as well as overall cardiovascular health. Consuming watermelon will also help reduce muscle soreness due to high levels of magnesium and citrulline. It also powerfully protects the liver from harmful toxins like carbon tetrachloride.
In addition to all of this, watermelons also have a low calorie density which basically means that even a large portion of it contains very few calories. This makes it a great food for weight loss since it promotes the feeling of fullness without many calories. Being a fibrous food as well, it ensures good bowel movements and an elimination of toxins from your system.
The case for watermelons is pretty solid – not only are they great for hydration, their intense nutritional value ensures the overall health of many internal organs. With extremely low calorie content, these have all the pleasure without any of the guilt!
